Hiking from Ždiar in the Belianske and High Tatras
The Belianske and High Tatras offer everything from gentle walks to full-day hikes. Here are some routes starting in Ždiar and nearby. Before setting off, always check the weather, trail markings and seasonal closures.
Monkova dolina and Kopské sedlo
The nature trail starts at the car park below Monkova dolina, 3.4 km from the resort. It follows the valley between Ždiarska vidla (2,146 m) and Hlúpy, crossing Široké sedlo (1,825 m) to reach Kopské sedlo (1,749 m). The 6 km ascent gains 930 m and takes three to four hours. Six information boards introduce the local karst landscape, dwarf pines and the chamois that live here.
Široké sedlo offers views of both the Belianske and High Tatras. Continuing from Kopské sedlo to Tatranská Javorina or via Veľké Biele pleso makes this a full-day hike, so plan your return transport in advance.
Seasonal closures and access to the route are governed by the TANAP national park visitor regulations. Since reopening, the trail through Monkova dolina can be walked in both directions; check the latest notices before setting off.
Plesnivec mountain hut and the Valley of Seven Springs
From Tatranská Kotlina, the green-marked trail leads through the forest to Plesnivec (1,290 m), the only mountain hut in the Belianske Tatras. Allow for around 5 km each way on a moderately demanding route, particularly towards the end. For the return walk, consult an up-to-date map for the yellow-marked trail through the Valley of Seven Springs.
In June and July, flowers fill the valley, turning it into a natural botanical garden of the Belianske Tatras. The hut serves home-style meals and offers overnight accommodation. With parking by the Belianska Cave, you can combine the hike with a cave visit.
Zelené pleso lake
From the Biela voda bus stop, follow the yellow-marked trail up the valley to Chata pri Zelenom plese (1,551 m). The route is roughly 8 km each way with 640 m of ascent. It suits fit walkers and older children; allow time for a proper hike.
With enough energy, you can continue over Veľká Svišťovka (2,037 m) and descend to Tatranská Lomnica, or head via Veľké Biele pleso and Kopské sedlo through Monkova dolina back to Ždiar. The route via Kopské sedlo is a full-day high-mountain hike.
Selected high-mountain trails in TANAP are closed seasonally from 1 November to 31 May. Chata pri Zelenom plese is accessible year-round; check for any exceptional closures before setting off.
Hrebienok and the Studený potok waterfalls
A funicular takes you from Starý Smokovec to Hrebienok (1,285 m). From there, a marked trail leads to the Studený potok waterfalls and Rainerova chata, with uneven ground in places. Conditions permitting, you can continue to Zamkovského chata.
From November to April, Hrebienok hosts the Tatra Ice Dome, made from 225 tonnes of ice, with sledging by the funicular.
Lomnický štít by cable car
From Tatranská Lomnica, a 21-minute drive away, a gondola takes you to Skalnaté pleso (1,751 m). A smaller cable car then continues to Lomnický štít (2,634 m), Slovakia’s second-highest peak. You have 50 minutes at the summit, with views from the Low Tatras to the Polish plains and across the Belianske Tatras, seen from the opposite side to the view from our resort.
Ticket prices for Lomnický štít vary, and capacity is often limited. Check current prices and availability on the operator’s website and book ahead. From Skalnaté pleso, you can take another cable car or choose a marked walking route to suit the conditions.
Štrbské Pleso and easy walking routes
Štrbské Pleso is around 45 minutes away by car. The walk around the lake is about 2.5 km long. The Solisko Express chairlift takes you to Chata pod Soliskom (1,814 m), from where, weather permitting, you can follow the marked trail to Predné Solisko (2,117 m). Check that the chairlift is running before travelling.
Choose shorter local walks using an up-to-date map and the weather forecast. Even routes close to the resort may include climbs or stretches of uneven ground.
Before your hike
Before setting off, check the TANAP visitor regulations, current trail closures and the weather. Bring sturdy footwear, clothing for changing weather, water and a charged phone; there may be no signal on the ridges. In an emergency, call the Slovak Mountain Rescue Service on 18 300. Our reception team will be happy to help you choose a route.
Walking times and elevation gains are approximate, based on hiking maps and mountain hut websites. Check them against current conditions before setting off.
