Ždiar was first mentioned in written records in 1590. It was founded by Gorals, shepherds and woodcutters who arrived during the Wallachian settlement of the region. You can still hear the Goral dialect today, including in our kitchen. The village has been a folk architecture conservation area since 1977, with 183 protected buildings, more than any other such conservation area in Slovakia.
Timber houses with painted gables line the road for several kilometres. Some of the finest are in Blaščacká dolina and around the Ždiarsky dom Museum. The Goral Folklore Festival takes place at the beginning of August each year; check dates and the programme with the organiser.

From our guesthouse, walk through the village along the main road or the side lanes. Look out for painted gables, wooden fences and stone foundations; the oldest houses are over a hundred years old. Allow an hour to reach Ždiarsky dom. On the way back, stop at the viewpoint on Antošovský vrch.
The nature trail through Monkova dolina leads from Ždiar over Široké sedlo to Kopské sedlo. At around 6 km, it is one of the more demanding hikes. Check current trail access and Tatra National Park (TANAP) rules before setting out.

Bachledova dolina is just around 6 km from Wellness Resort Kamzík***, a popular destination for families, couples and anyone who enjoys being active outdoors.
In summer, enjoy the Treetop Walk, the Kingdom of the Forest playground and a gondola ride with views of the surrounding countryside. In winter, Bachledka Ski & Sun becomes a popular ski resort. A free ski bus is also available during the winter season.
The 1,234 m trail rises up to 24 m above the ground and ends at a 32 m observation tower overlooking the Belianske Tatras. A 67 m slide runs down from the tower, and the Kingdom of the Forest nature playground is nearby. Check the operators’ websites for current opening hours, admission prices and accessibility information.
Bachledka is around 6 km and a 10-minute drive from the resort.
The Belianske Tatras are on your doorstep, and the High Tatras are around a 20-minute drive away. Ždiar makes an ideal starting point for gentle walks, full-day hikes and visits to some of the Tatras’ most beautiful places.

The largest show cave in the Tatras and the only one in the High Tatras. The 70-minute tour covers 1,370 m and 874 steps, with temperatures of 5–6 °C inside. From the car park, allow another 25 minutes for the kilometre-long uphill walk to the entrance.

An easy hike from Tatranská Kotlina: follow the green trail through the forest for around two hours to the hut at 1,290 m. Return on the yellow trail through Dolina siedmich prameňov, past the strong spring that gave the valley its name. The only mountain hut in the Belianske Tatras serves home-style cooking.
A popular full-day outing in the Tatras. From the Biela voda bus stop, follow the yellow trail uphill for around two and a half to three hours to Chata pri Zelenom plese at 1,551 m. The lake lies in a mountain cirque beneath Jastrabia veža and Kežmarský štít. Return the same way, or continue via Veľké Biele pleso and Kopské sedlo to Ždiar.
Prince Hohenlohe of Prussia commissioned the wooden Church of St Anne, built in 1902–1903, and the hunting lodge, built in 1883–1885. The lodge is now managed by the Office of the President; opening days, tour duration and admission prices may vary.
Take the gondola from Tatranská Lomnica to Skalnaté pleso at 1,751 m, then the cable car to Lomnický štít at 2,634 m, the second-highest peak in the Tatras. You have 50 minutes at the summit, with views stretching from the Low Tatras to the Polish plains.

Slovakia’s only funicular takes you from Starý Smokovec to Hrebienok at 1,285 m, along a 1,937 m track. From the upper station, a marked trail leads to the waterfalls, then onwards to Rainerova chata and Zamkovského chata mountain huts. In winter, you can go sledging at Hrebienok and visit the Tatra Ice Dome, built from 225 tonnes of ice, from November to April.
The Tatras’ best-known lake has a shoreline path that takes around an hour at a leisurely pace, rowing boats in summer and the Solisko Express chairlift to Chata pod Soliskom at 1,814 m. From the hut, a trail leads up to Predné Solisko at 2,117 m, with a wonderful view down to the lake. It is a little further away, but well worth a full-day trip in fine weather.
You do not have to travel far to ski. Ski Strachan, Ski Strednica and Bachledka Ski & Sun are in Ždiar and the surrounding area. They are part of Tatry Super Ski, which lets you ski at several resorts with one pass. We recommend checking the pass’s validity and conditions for the winter season you plan to visit.
Ždiar and the surrounding area have plenty of places for even the youngest visitors to enjoy. In Ždiar itself, visit Strachankovo Family Park with its Goral farm, tree houses and mini golf. At Bachledka, explore the Kingdom of the Forest, or head for an adventure on the high ropes at Spider Park.
If the weather turns, visit Belianska Cave, explore the optical illusions at Tricklandia in Starý Smokovec or spend a day in thermal pools at AquaCity Poprad, Thermal Park Vrbov or Termy BUKOVINA in Poland.

Ždiar is also ideally placed for full-day trips beyond the Belianske Tatras. Poland is just a few minutes away, while the Pieniny Mountains and the historic Spiš region offer a wealth of cultural sights and natural attractions within easy reach.

The largest lake in the Tatras is on the Polish side, just beyond Lysá Poľana. From Palenica Białczańska car park, a 9 km surfaced road leads to the lake, taking around two and a half hours on foot. Horse-drawn transport is also available. Parking requires an e-ticket purchased in advance at tpn.pl; in high season, the car park can fill up early in the morning.

Spend a day in Poland’s winter capital: stroll along the pedestrian street Krupówki, take the eight-minute funicular ride up Gubałówka for views across the Tatras, see the Wielka Krokiew ski jumps and try oscypek smoked cheese. On the way back, stop at the thermal baths in Białka or Bukowina.
Built in 1717 without a single metal nail, the wooden articular church has been UNESCO-listed since 2008. Beside it stands the Lutheran lyceum with the largest school library in Central Europe, while the town is overlooked by a 15th-century castle. Check opening days for the church and lyceum before visiting.
A wooden raft trip through the Dunajec Gorge beneath the cliffs of Trzy Korony takes an hour and a half and is suitable even for young children. By the departure point stands a 14th-century Carthusian monastery with a museum.

A medieval town with defensive walls and a UNESCO-listed historic centre. The Basilica of St James houses the world’s tallest late Gothic wooden altar, measuring 18.62 m, created in Master Paul’s workshop between 1507 and 1517.
One of Europe’s largest castle complexes, UNESCO-listed since 1993. Combine it with Levoča for a day trip; from the ramparts, you can see Spišská Kapitula and, in clear weather, as far as the Tatras.

Distances and journey times are approximate, measured from Wellness Resort Kamzík***, Ždiar 513, in normal traffic. During peak holiday periods and the ski season, allow extra time, especially for roads, border crossings and car parks.
You will find basic groceries, a pharmacy and other services in Ždiar itself. Medical care is also available in the village: a GP practice opens on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, a paediatrician on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a dental practice from Monday to Friday.
The nearest bus stop, “Ždiar, odbočka”, is approximately 250 m from the resort.
Overnight guests have free private parking on site. We also offer garage parking for motorcycles and secure bicycle storage in the garage during your stay.
